Order of Ryokan
Celebrating 25 years in 2025
Sangha is Community
THE LIVING VIRTUES OF THE ORDER OF RYOKAN
As a member of the Order of Ryokan,
as a student of Ryokan’s teachings, we commit ourselves to:
Remain constant to Zazen
Live modestly with goods and belongings
Live in awareness of the environment and its fragility
Practice kindness
Maintain creative practice and activity in the arts
Be faithful to solitude
Propagate peace in the world and the surrounding communities
Remain in active communication with other members of the Sangha
While we do gather socially at times, we also have social welfare concerns that include climate change and environmental health, compassionate legislation, racial justice, gender and LGBTQ rights and equality, UN Sustainable Development Goals, needs of the homeless, food assistance, gun responsibility, prison reform, cessation of capital punishment, fair housing, cessation of solitary confinement, education for the imprisoned, immigration reform, voting rights, anti-poverty programs to name just some of today's extraordinary challenges.
